Engagement Photography, Planting Fields Arboretum Oyster Bay-Caitlin and Chris’s-Autumn in NY

It’s hard to believe this was just a week and a half ago? The fall leaves were at their peak and it was 60 degrees. Caitlin and I had many wonderful conversations over the phone and this was our first meeting in person. I finally got to meet her fiance and Mom as well. By the end of the afternoon we were old friends. Caitlin and Chris, I can’t wait for the big day!

Not Wedding Styled Shoot – Wedding Proposal and Surprise Romantic Dinner

Modern Wedding Photography is excited to be participating in the Not Wedding on September 23rd, 6:30 PM at The Green Building in Brooklyn. The Not Wedding is a bridal show alternative in the form of a big, fake wedding.  All the vendors have to use their talents to bring the show together. One of my contributions was to do a styled shoot. I have my current stable of talent I could have used for the shoot, but I thought it would be great to bring on the other vendors who are participating in the September Not Wedding event. I’m so glad I did. We had a great time working together and I got to work with such a fun and exceptional group of wedding pros. What is wonderful about Not Wedding is that they want you to connect with other vendors as well as engaged couples. I thought it would be fun to do a surprise romantic dinner on the street. My husband is really getting into cooking these days. That might have been a little subconscious inspiration. One of my favorite places to shoot are the streets of NYC, especially Manhattan. In 2004 a documentary featured my photography and how I use NY as my backdrop. Outside with the elements is where I’m most comfortable. You see the old timers playing cards on the street in the outer boroughs all the time, but not too many Manhattanites doing a DIY dinner by the hydrant.  I thought, why is this guy in our shoot planning this dinner? So I figure the whole thing might make more sense if it was a wedding proposal.

A week before the shoot I found the accordion at an estate sale. It came with a Steve Urkel doll, too funny. I wanted a street musician for the shoot, but who would it be and what would they play? The accordion was the perfect accessory for our shoot. My godson Max wanted to try it on. One look at him trying the accordion on and  I knew I had my photo shoot busker.  It was so hard to select images for this post. I wanted to make sure each vendor shined and there were so many beautiful contributions made by the team. I wanted to give a special thank you to Alden and Geoff for being our couple for the shoot. They just met on set and they were perfect together. The camera loves you two:) Alden works for Ryan Brown Catering, (they will be cooking for Not Wedding). Geoff is a friend of Nicole and Tom from The Arrangement, who stepped in at the last minute. Thank you so much! Thank you to Allie Webber from Not Wedding who loved my idea right away and said, “Go do it”. Thank you Leah from Color Pop Events for helping with planning and coordinating logistics. Thank you to Liz from Octavia & Brown for your beautiful china and dinner table props.  Thank you to Tom and Nicole from The Arrangement for your stunning florals, beautiful styling and for getting Geoff for our shoot. Thank you to Ryan Brown of Ryan Brown Catering for your gorgeous food. I hope the photographs show how delicious it all is. Thank you Kim from Ryan Brown for coming early and setting up the meal on Liz’s precious china. Thank you so Much Nikki from Corinna Beau : Letterpress + Design for the fabulous stationary and especially that incredible Menu. Thank you for going with the flow everytime I kept thinking of new ideas and giving you more work to do. Thank you to Styles on B  and Nicole Sievers Makeup Artistry for doing Alden’s hair and makeup. She is a beautiful woman and you got her all camera ready for us. I also wanted to thank my dear friend Judy for talking the day off work to help out and chaperone her son the accordion player.  OXOX Denise    Formal Vendor Credits are at the end of the post.

Coney Island- Cyclone Engagement Shoot- Ravit and David
Denise!!!!! I'm in love!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The pictures came out absolutely beautiful. You have no idea how much I appreciate the the whole experience. Thank you again, Ravit and David
Having a five pound camera slam you in the face as you plunge 85 feet at 60 mph is painful, (I’ve tried it in the past). So with this wisdom, I took the coaster photos of Ravit and David with a charming plastic film camera that is lighter than an iPhone. I’ve mastered the art of not holding on while riding ANY coaster a long time ago.  So it was a pure delight on that steamy July afternoon to create some exciting images of my clients holding on for dear life. They kept telling me when the drops were approaching, “Denise look out”.  When we exited the Cyclone I almost said, “Oh let’s look at the photos.” Then I got a good look at the back of that 20th century plastic camera and realized I would have to wait several hours until I would see anything. I was ready for another spin. It was a total rush shooting and riding the Cyclone,(combining two of my favorite things to do). If I had some La Maison Du Chocolat truffles in my mouth it would have hit the trifecta.  As my luck would have it, they were completely satisfied with their two minute ride and were confident that I got some wonderful images.
The other images were taken on the beach, around the park and of-coarse on the Wonder Wheel. With those images I used my Canon 5D Mark III and we had plenty of instant gratification. My assistant and I had such a wonderful time photographing Ravit and David. They were so natural in front of the camera. I always like to show the great friendship my couples share. Hopefully you can see that friendship in these images and be inspired by their love for each other. I’ll be posting their wedding images next on the blog, but I had to post their engagement shoot first :)- Denise-Owner/Founder Modern Wedding Photography
