It’s hard to believe this was just a week and a half ago? The fall leaves were at their peak and it was 60 degrees. Caitlin and I had many wonderful conversations over the phone and this was our first meeting in person. I finally got to meet her fiance and Mom as well. By the end of the afternoon we were old friends. Caitlin and Chris, I can’t wait for the big day!

The Royalton at the Roslyn Country Club- Krista and Jason’s Big Day!

Jason and I not only wanted the best of the best vendors, but we also wanted ones who we bonded with. Vendors that we felt comfortable with and ones we knew would make our wedding day that much more special.

Krista and Jason after they said I Do! Outdoor ceremony at The Royalton Mansion, Roslyn New York

Introducing Our Newly Weds helping the Newly Engaged blog series. I thought it would be helpful to ask my clients to share some post wedding wisdom to accompany the blog post.  I had such a great journey with Krista and Jason. We all have Lisa Marie from L. Marie Events to thank for bringing us together. We hit it off at our first meeting. Our one hour engagement shoot turned into 3 hours, (but felt like 10 minutes 🙂 Prepping, planning, fun meetings, the amazing wedding day and finally reliving it all at their In-Studio preview.  One of the first things I remember Jason saying at our first meeting was, “We want to be able to have a drink with our vendors after the wedding is over”. How cool is that? I love that Krista and Jason understood that is was important to surround themselves with not just vendors, but with people they could connect with. Vendors who would care as much about the wedding day as they did and take care of them. They got it that not all vendors are the same and building a team of great wedding professionals to surround yourself with was critical in the success of your overall wedding day experience. Thank you Krista and Jason for such a wonderful experience and for all of the great moment you gave me:) OX,Denise

Guest Post by Krista Oliver-Here I am a couple months since my wedding has past and I couldn’t be happier with each and every decision Jason and I made. You always hear, read and sometimes experience those wedding “horrors” that are sometimes preventable, and sometimes not. I am still in complete awe with how lucky we truly were in having the absolute perfect wedding day. I firmly believe someone up there was looking down on us. The reality of it though is all within the vendors you hire. Jason and I not only wanted the best of the best vendors, but we also wanted ones who we bonded with. Vendors that we felt comfortable with and ones we knew would make our wedding day that much more special. To say we succeeded in this is an understatement. I had the BEST vendors, from start to finish. Every single one of them surpassed all my visions and dreams. I understand some couples have strict budgets, but my biggest piece of advice would be to never skimp on the services and vendors. You can always swap out a rose, for a hydrangea, or those silk napkins for cotton ones- chances are your guests won’t even notice. They will notice poor food, not so good music, lack of service and all those imperative aspects that make your wedding stand out. Jason and I would look forward to meeting with each and every one of our vendors. They all understood my visions and made me feel at ease. A lot of brides are worry stricken in the weeks leading up to their wedding. I had not a worry in the world. I had the utmost faith and trust in each of my vendors. I knew they would deliver on my wedding day and boy was I right. I was also lucky enough to have the world’s best wedding planner. When I say she is the “worlds” best, I mean every single word of that. She gave me the gift of being a guest at my own wedding. She handled everything for me in the weeks leading up to my wedding. On my wedding day, she and her team were godsends. My wedding would never have been what it was without her amazing services, and her dedication to Jason and me. Because of her I was introduced to most of my amazing vendors, Denise being one of them. I am so grateful for not only having the most perfect wedding day a girl could dream of, but for being able to relive and remember that perfect day through all our beautiful pictures and albums. We couldn’t have been more blessed.- Scroll below to see some moments of their beautiful wedding and check out their list of vendors!

Krista loved the way her dress looked from above, like a trumpet. So I was sure to bring my 8 foot ladder to the wedding :) The sun was going down pretty fast at this point. Having them look up at the sky gave us the last rays of natural light.

They both cut the cake at the same time with their own knifes,(one knife, one server). It looked so much better than two people trying to cut a cake with one knife. I hate when the maitre d' try’s to show the bride and groom how to cut the cake for the photo. It’s already a photo-op moment, do we really need to make it more contrived? I like when the bride and groom are left to do what comes naturally. You can see from these photos you can capture more authentic moments this way.

Not Wedding Styled Shoot – Wedding Proposal and Surprise Romantic Dinner

Modern Wedding Photography is excited to be participating in the Not Wedding on September 23rd, 6:30 PM at The Green Building in Brooklyn. The Not Wedding is a bridal show alternative in the form of a big, fake wedding.  All the vendors have to use their talents to bring the show together. One of my contributions was to do a styled shoot. I have my current stable of talent I could have used for the shoot, but I thought it would be great to bring on the other vendors who are participating in the September Not Wedding event. I’m so glad I did. We had a great time working together and I got to work with such a fun and exceptional group of wedding pros. What is wonderful about Not Wedding is that they want you to connect with other vendors as well as engaged couples. I thought it would be fun to do a surprise romantic dinner on the street. My husband is really getting into cooking these days. That might have been a little subconscious inspiration. One of my favorite places to shoot are the streets of NYC, especially Manhattan. In 2004 a documentary featured my photography and how I use NY as my backdrop. Outside with the elements is where I’m most comfortable. You see the old timers playing cards on the street in the outer boroughs all the time, but not too many Manhattanites doing a DIY dinner by the hydrant.  I thought, why is this guy in our shoot planning this dinner? So I figure the whole thing might make more sense if it was a wedding proposal.

A week before the shoot I found the accordion at an estate sale. It came with a Steve Urkel doll, too funny. I wanted a street musician for the shoot, but who would it be and what would they play? The accordion was the perfect accessory for our shoot. My godson Max wanted to try it on. One look at him trying the accordion on and  I knew I had my photo shoot busker.  It was so hard to select images for this post. I wanted to make sure each vendor shined and there were so many beautiful contributions made by the team. I wanted to give a special thank you to Alden and Geoff for being our couple for the shoot. They just met on set and they were perfect together. The camera loves you two:) Alden works for Ryan Brown Catering, (they will be cooking for Not Wedding). Geoff is a friend of Nicole and Tom from The Arrangement, who stepped in at the last minute. Thank you so much! Thank you to Allie Webber from Not Wedding who loved my idea right away and said, “Go do it”. Thank you Leah from Color Pop Events for helping with planning and coordinating logistics. Thank you to Liz from Octavia & Brown for your beautiful china and dinner table props.  Thank you to Tom and Nicole from The Arrangement for your stunning florals, beautiful styling and for getting Geoff for our shoot. Thank you to Ryan Brown of Ryan Brown Catering for your gorgeous food. I hope the photographs show how delicious it all is. Thank you Kim from Ryan Brown for coming early and setting up the meal on Liz’s precious china. Thank you so Much Nikki from Corinna Beau : Letterpress + Design for the fabulous stationary and especially that incredible Menu. Thank you for going with the flow everytime I kept thinking of new ideas and giving you more work to do. Thank you to Styles on B  and Nicole Sievers Makeup Artistry for doing Alden’s hair and makeup. She is a beautiful woman and you got her all camera ready for us. I also wanted to thank my dear friend Judy for talking the day off work to help out and chaperone her son the accordion player.  OXOX Denise    Formal Vendor Credits are at the end of the post.

Guastavino’s Wedding, Megan and Derek’s fun filled day!

We headed to Grand Central Terminal where Megan and Derek want to have their first look. One consequence of walking through such busy terminal is your wedding dress will get dirty no matter how hard you try to keep it clean. Even if your wedding planner is helping you all the way. Eventually she/he will have to let go of the dress and its photo time. By some type of divine intervention on a Saturday afternoon no commuters got in our way, (or we didn’t get in theirs). There weren’t any other wedding parties around either.  I feel like each one of my client’s weddings has a little bit of fairy dust sprinkled on it. No matter what, everything always comes together.  It’s always great to have some time alone with the bride and groom before the wedding and family formals.  We were able to get all of the family photos done outside Guastavino’s before the wind storm. After that no one dared to step outside of the venue. The romantic, candlelight ceremony took place at the venue as well as the action packed reception. It was an exuberant day and my assistant and I were thrilled to be part of it. Thank you Meghan and Derek for being so wonderful to work with! – Denise

The Knot Hall of Fame- Modern Wedding Photography is Honored by The Knot

Modern Wedding Photography has been a Knot Best of Weddings Pick for many years. I have to thank  The Knot and our amazing clients for all of their support. In 2014 The Knot implemented their hall of fame. As the owner of Modern Wedding Photography I am thrilled to be a recipient of this wonderful award and proud to be inducted during the inaugural year. I have been shooting weddings since the early 90s. I would shoot the weddings of many of my editorial clients. I always try to bring my magazine photography experience to my wedding photography. It’s one of the many things that make Modern Wedding Photography different. I believe it was 2001 or so when I first started working with the Knot. At the time I think there were only a few photographers in the Long Island section, or any New York section. It is unbelievable how many people have entered the field of wedding photography over the years.  The internet has given you instant access to so many wedding photographers, but now you have more studios to cull through than ever. I imagine it must be so overwhelming trying to find a photographer to photograph your wedding day. Most people do not have a deep knowledge of photography. How do you decide which photographer to use? What are the studio’s credentials? How do they deal with a plethora of lighting and weather situations? Are they truly telling the story of their client’s wedding day with their images. In 20 years you will still love your wedding album? This means staying away from the current clichés, gimmicks and Photoshop trends of the moment. Photographing your wedding day is a huge responsibility, as well as an honor for me to document. I’m always around to answer all of your questions. Please feel free to call me today for a consultation. 516.823.7315 or 212.332.9696. Carlyle on the Green, Farmingdale, NY Meghan and Sean’s Wedding

Wedding inspiration via Meghan and Sean’s fabulous wedding day.  After the ceremony at St. Rosa of Lima in Massapequa, we headed to Johnny McGorey’s for a few pints. No, we really stopped there for a few photos. The local pub, is where Meghan and Sean reconnect several years after high school. We got some fun shots at the bar before heading over to Carlyle on the Green. I’m a big fan of lavender/purples and a splash of color on the cake, I’m in heaven.  The  ballroom at Carlyle was extra stunning due to the dramatic lighting.  The right lighting for your evening affair is so important. It sets the mood for the reception and can add depth to your photographs. Scroll below to see some wonderful images from Meghan and Sean’s wedding.

Thank you Meghan and Sean for being so wonderful to work with. I had a lot  fun on your wedding day.  I’ll always remember uncle Kevin singing, “Love Train” with Code-Bleu and everyone getting up to join the train.- Best, Denise

LOVESICK EXPO – Music Hall of Williamsburg-Brooklyn- NY

I love weddings, but I am not a big fan of weddings shows. Most wedding shows lack the personal touch that my clients and I crave. They usually try to appeal to everyone. As the old saying goes, “A friend to all is a friend to none!” There is a new wave of wedding shows that I know my clients would love to attend – Lovesick Expo being one of them. They are smaller, usually in fun locations and the vendors are carefully selected by the coordinators of the event. The last point is the most important! These shows have a specific point of view and want you to express who you are as a couple. They want to reach the independent minded couple who aren’t committed to a formula of what a wedding should be.

So, design the life you want to have and the wedding you want to remember, (that’s one of my motto’s). I had the chance to meet with the vendors featured below. What they all had in common was they were fun, friendly, personable and highly creative. Links to the vendors are also included, so give them a call and see how they can help you create a fabulous wedding day. My decision to blog about Saturday’s Lovesick Expo was spontaneous. The images were taken with my point and shoot, (they have a little bit of a fun, gritty feel). It’s your wedding day make sure you have lots of fun!-Denise – To see more of our work please visit Modern Wedding Photography

Long Island Florists – Bayview Florist Wedding Studio – Vendor Spotlight

Bayview Florist & Montage-VendorSpotlight
Not all florists are the same. If you need a great florist check out the blog post for some wonderful advice by Marion, own of Bayview Florist Wedding Studio.

Marion: You’ve just gotten engaged.  Now the fun begins! Planning a wedding, whew!  There are a lot of details to cover and one of them is flowers. Are flowers important?  Flowers will most likely be included in every minute of your day. Starting with the bouquets the girls will carry, to the ceremony space where you take your vows, to the ballroom where you celebrate. Let’s look at each category, personal, ceremony and reception and see what should be taken into account. How do you choose your bouquet flowers?  Before you meet with your florist, determine your style.  Are you vintage, formal or Modern? Your bridesmaid’s dress color will play an important role in deciding what colors and flower choices will be used throughout the wedding.

Long Island Florist, Photos from The Garden City Hotel and Cherry Valley Country Club

Long Island Florist, Photos from The Garden City Hotel and Cherry Valley Country Club- Lauren and Curtis’s fantastic wedding day!

I pick wedding bouquets the same way I would pick a piece of jewelry for a great outfit.  They should accent what you’re wearing, not overpower it or be the focus. Your bouquet will be your most photographed accessory making it the most important one!  I like to infuse meaning to my bride’s bouquets with a piece of lace from mom’s dress or photo lockets of grandparents.

The men’s boutonnieres will correlate with the girl’s bouquets. Keep in mind, boutonnieres can really take a beating throughout the day! Unlike the bouquets, they are compressed time and time again with hearty hello hugs and are really put through the ringer!  You many want to consider an extra for the groom so that it looks fresh for the reception. Pocket squares are hugely popular right now.  If the men have a great pocket square and it’s a bold color, I would skip the boutonniere.  If it’s a subdued color, steel grey or black, you can still consider a flower but it’s not necessary.  Again, we don’t want to overdue, we want to accent.  You can have lots of great ideas, the trick is to understand that they may not all work together.

Modern Wedding Photography

The owl pin gives a wonderful personal touch. Groom’s Boutonniere-Cherry Valley Country Club- Garden City Wedding

You may have heard you should use flowers that are local and in season. If you’re using a trained florist, they will automatically direct you toward blooms that are in season without you having to ask.  We want to work with seasonal flowers as they are the fullest and lushest at their peak.

Tip: make an appointment with your florist one year ahead in the month you’re getting married so you can see what’s in season.

Choosing flowers for the ceremony should depend on where your ceremony is.  Will it be in a formal church, an outdoor vineyard, the same venue as the reception, do you require a chuppah? Different surroundings call for different embellishments.  Is your ceremony outdoors? What’s plan B if it rains?  A good florist will make sure you’re covered for all weather conditions. The ceremony may be the briefest part of your day but it is the most important. It will be remembered in your photographs forever. Make the space your own; add your colors through flowers.

Saint Raymonds of Penafort-East Rockaway NY

Saint Raymonds of Penafort-East Rockaway NY- From Meghan and Paul’s wonderful wedding!

Tip: Have your ceremony flowers moved to your ballroom.  This way they work for you all night!

The ballroom is the place where your personality and originality can really shine.  All eyes will be on the centerpieces so make them the focus of your bloom budget.  What feeling do you want to convey?  Classic elegance, vintage chic, polished contemporary?  The venue will have a lot to do with what style choices you make.  Your flowers need to belong to your space.  Water venues tend to be a bit less formal than mansions and hotels. That’s not to say that crystal chandeliers don’t belong in a barn.  The juxtaposition of the two can be amazing.  A trusted florist will be able to help you pull together your ideas into a cohesive visual concept that reflects your style and personality.

Tip: Start collecting photos to give your floral expert a window into what textures and concepts appeal to you.  Pinterest is a great place to start.

Most importantly, don’t worry about what everyone else will think! This is your wedding, let’s plan it the way you want it.  Bayview Florist is a boutique wedding studio with locations in Nassau and Suffolk.  Being a smaller company has its advantages.  It allows me the time to form a relationship with my brides, truly understanding their vision and bringing it to fruition.  I meet with my brides, hand select the blooms we will use for the wedding day and make sure all the smallest details are carried out.  We have 54 years’ experience and strive for inspired, creative designs that are unique to you. I have enjoyed working with every one of my brides and I look forward to working with you!
